The SUPER series is an ongoing experiment in one of Ljubljana's oldest socialist neighbouhoods, Savsko naselje. Since 2014, the project is slowly progressing every year.

2014: The mother of a local basketball star who tragically passed away comissioned us to renew an old basketball court in the neighbourhood. Together with local musician Rok Terkaj we initiated a series of workshops with children from the 7th grade, from the elementary school which is located in the vicinity of the playground. Along with them, we developed ideas and formed a plan for the renovation of the basketball court and the neighbouring green area with a hill. According to the children’s plans, we put up stands, hammocks, a memorial mural, a running track and we paved some of the pathways. The local children, their parents and other residents of the neighbourhood participated in the selection and developement of the project.

2015: We switched our focus from basketball court towards a nearby playground. We wanted that the playground equipment would be appropriate for all children, also for those with special needs. We met the children from primary school, kindergarten and the Rehabilitation Institute at workshops, and discussed their needs, wishes and abilities. Children were encouraged to design and draw the equipment they would like to have on the playground. All groups have decided for a house: some a house for animals, others a house for superheroes and the oldest students designed a house for the residents of neighbourhood. All their designs were combined into one house, a Superhouse, where children from all three generations can meet. The cost of the construction was covered with the help of local crowdfunding. In the meantime, residents painted the table, they organized painting workshops, they brought toys in the sandbox and they cleaned the space under hammocks by themselves. The house was a test to check what works and what not. The outcome contributed to the elaboration of a management and planning strategy of the public spaces in neighbourhoods.

2016: In two years we realized how different wishes and visions the residents have for Savsko naselje. The results of the survey show that some of the residents want new playground equipment and maintained green areas but they also want to sort out the ownership relations and determine what the public good is. We will renovate the playground and continue with research and advocacy work on open public spaces in residential neighbourhoods, which have started from the problems we sensed in Savsko naselje.
