Inventing a Home: Report of Poetic Architectural Practices from China

简介

Over the past few decades, the concept of “home” in China has changed rapidly. On the one hand, the rapid development of industry driven by human mobility and Global trade has led to more and more “homes” being abandoned, and the countryside has become the “nostalgic landscapes” of urban people and the place of imagination of “ideal home”; on the other hand, people are anxious to buy a house in urban apartments to realize the calling of home.

On the one hand, this phenomenon has institutional limitations, although purchasing power has increased, the restrictions of land property rights mobility and urban welfare make people only “buy” home on this track. Real estate developers have assumed the role of homemaker in the past two decades. On the other hand, Chinese families are also being re-established in the fierce industrialization and urbanization.

Due to the lack of opportunities in the market to design single-family houses for individuals and families, the main contributors to the dream of “home” in China are mainly real estate companies. Real estate has also become the most cash-rich area in China in the past two decades. Behind this, it is the anxiety about “home” in the post-socialist period: home any more?

Constrained by this reality, China`s architects still exist as explorers. One is spiritual home imagination, such as ZENG Renzhen’s Fantasy Garden, which uses traditional gardens as habitats to create a fantastic spiritual home; Like XING di, who uses spiritual space such as academy and church to shape the “home” of the community; Architect Zhao Qi, who seeks ideal Classical Home in the archaeology of modern film and television.

Taking Li Guanghan and Tang Yong, for example, retain their homes for the rural residents in the era of large population mobility; Ren Weizhong restores the “home” to the earth, which is the most intimate material itself for the Chinese people to seek its possibilities. Similarly, Dr. Shao Changzhi placed his hope of home on bamboo and explored the possibility of bamboo architecture.
